Client Stories: Not Putting All Your Eggs in One (Property) Basket.

I first met Meryl and Jay in their flat in North London. Over many years they had built up a decent net worth by seizing opportunities and developing various properties in that area, as well completely re-developing another home in Europe.

To their credit, they recognised that it was not sensible to have so much of their personal wealth tied into just one type of asset – residential property – most of it within a very small radius in North London.

We looked together at how they could:

  • diversify their assets
  • generate capital growth and potential future income from different sources
  • and make their finances more tax-efficient.

This involved some in-depth conversations around the risks as well as rewards of investing in globally diversified equities and fixed income, and also the different types of accounts they could use to hold the investments – with various tax implications. We also factored in their need to prioritise liquidity, while transitioning their risk exposure to align with their time horizons for the likely use of their capital.

The job isn’t done yet – it’s very difficult to do anything quickly when you own physical property because it takes time to sell!

But Meryl and Jay have already found it helpful to have me as a sounding board for strategic thinking, and have seen the benefit of investment into thousands of different companies all around the world, each competing to grow stronger and more profitable.
